New BIS Update: Silver Jewelry Gets HUID-Based Hallmarking from September 2025

Why This Matters ?

If you buy or sell silver jewelry, there’s some good news! From 1st September 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has introduced a new HUID-based hallmarking system for silver. This step will make silver jewelry more trustworthy, traceable, and transparent for everyone.

The New Hallmarking Format

From now on, hallmarked silver jewelry will carry three simple things:

  •  The BIS Standard Mark + the word “SILVER”
  • The Purity Grade (for example, 925, 958, 999 etc.)
  •  A Unique HUID Code for digital verification

What Has Changed?

  • A brand-new standard IS 2112:2025 has come into effect, replacing the old one (IS 2112:2014).
  • Hallmarking silver jewelry is still voluntary for now, but highly recommended.
  • Every hallmarked silver piece will now have its own unique HUID code that customers can check online.

Purity Grades: Old vs New

  • Earlier, jewelers used these grades: 800, 835, 900, 925, 970, 990
  • Now, BIS has updated them to: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990, 999

How Does This Help?

  • For Jewellers:
    • Build stronger trust with customers.
    • Stay ahead by adopting the new HUID system early.
  • For Customers:
    • You can easily verify any silver article using the BIS Care App.
    • Just enter or scan the HUID code and you’ll see purity, jeweler details, and hallmarking date.
    • Peace of mind knowing your jewelry is authentic.
